Metal stud framing refers to the construction of walls and ceilings using steel components. Metal frames consists of two main components; namely: studs and tracks. Heavier gauge metal studs are used in big commercial projects while lighter gauge steel is used in residential home applications such as walls, ceilings, and bulkheads. The first step that we do is layout the position of the tracks on the floor using a laser equipment and chalk line. After which, using a plumb bob or laser level, we then mark the location of the top tracks. Next is we cut the metal studs and tracks into size using a straight-cut snips for precise cutting and circular saw for volume cutting. Once finished, the best way to proceed is to fasten both bottom and top tracks first and install the studs one at a time until the whole section is finished. If there are openings to account for, additional studs and tracks will be fastened around the opening ready to be installed.
Metal Stud Framing Pro Tips
For easier installation of metal studs after both bottom and top tracks are fastened, carefully measure the exact height for each stud to ensure a snug fit.
Precisely cut the metal studs according to the measured height with tolerances less than 1/16 inch. Anything more than that will transfer the weight of the wall onto the screws which weakens the whole metal stud framing system.
Use metal studs to locate the location of the top tracks by standing one stud along with a level if you don’t have a laser level.
